Emily & Jon | getting to know you session

On Tuesday I met up with Emily and Jon over at the Shelby Township Park at 24 Mile and Van Dyke for some “getting to know you” session pics, sometimes called engagement photos. They will be getting married in October of this year and as relaxed as they were for this session I think their wedding will be lots of fun. The session started out great until Jon told me that her name was Emily and not Vanessa, like I was calling her. What an idiot I am sometimes. Sorry about that Emily. I had just finished reading all of the itinerary for my wedding this weekend and that brides name was Vanessa, and I guess I had that name stuck in my head. Oh well, let’s hope I smarten up between now and their wedding so I can at least get their names right. Here are just a few images I captured during their session.

Ann Arbor | move in day

On Saturday Deb and I took a side trip to visit Ann Arbor and check out a photo location. After our photo scout we headed to Dominick’s for lunch, which was fantastic. If you ever get a chance to visit Ann Arbor you have to check out Dominick’s for some eats and some awesome sangria, which they are famous for. Just a word of caution, be careful with the sangria, it will knock you socks off. Served cold and in mason jars, gotta like that. As Deb and I sat out on the front porch enjoying our lunch we noticed a lot of tours going on with parents and new students. It was move-in day for the kids in Ann Arbor and it sure brought back memories of Deb and I helping John move in to his first house. There were parents there with cleaning supplies and kids were probably all a little overwhelmed by it all. We remembered when we first took John to his house we actually drove all the way home and returned with cleaning supplies the same day because we weren’t having any part of our child living in that filthy place. John moved to a few locations during his stay in Ann Arbor but made most of his closest friends while at that house. Once Deb and I finished lunch we walked around a little to see if we could work off a little of the sangria and I took pictures. I know, what a surpise that is. But I just love the old, and new, architecture in that town. The firt picture below is actually from the location we were checking out but the rest is from our photo trek in town.

PS: Sorry about all the door pictures. It seems I have a thing with old doors these days.

Mini Vacation 2012

Well this past weekend Deb and I headed out for a mini vacation to the Lake Michigan side of our beautiful state. We started out on Friday after Deb got off work and our first stop was Grand Haven, Michigan, where we wandered around through the town before heading off to our hotel in Holland, MI, which was just 20 minutes away. This particular weekend was one of the busiest weekends of all for hotels in Michigan since I tried approximately 50 other hotels up and down the western coast of Michigan. It seems this is one of the last weekends before the kids go back to school so finding a hotel on this coast was almost impossible. We were both very pleased with the Hampton Inn in Holland, MI, which was absolutely wonderful. Apparently it was just recently renovated and everything about this hotel was above my expectations. Sometimes I don’t like to make reservations at a hotel where I don’t know anyone who has previously visited, but this weekend I had to since finding a room anywhere was difficult.

On Saturday we headed to downtown Holland to wander around the shops before heading to Saugutuck for the rest of the day. I believe Saugutuck is one of those towns that just never ends, however I think we made a good dent on hitting every single shop in that town, and a few bars as well for lunch and refreshments. Once we got back to our hotel in Holland we enjoyed the pool and whirlpool, along with taking advantage of our free drink from the hotel, before going out to dinner for some great seafood. Deb and I were pretty tired after all that walking but on Sunday we headed to South Haven to wander around and shop before getting on the road to home. I’m not sure Deb and I have ever walked as much as we did this weekend but we had lots of fun and weather was absolutely amazing. Not too hot and not too cold, just perfect I would say.

So before we left I was thinking I wouldn’t take my camera on this trip, so what was I thinking. Taking pictures is what I love to do so here are just a few of our trip. Enjoy!

The Wedding of Taryn & Alex | the slideshow

On Saturday, August 11, 2012, my son John and I shot the wedding of Taryn and Alex at the awesome Reserve in Birmingham, MI. We started out with the girls at Taryn’s Moms house where we did the “first look” shots. The cool thing was that Alex and the guys were just down the street getting ready. So we were able to get shots of them walking over to the house to see his new bride for the first time before they get married. Taryn and Alex met at a very early age and the rest is history. I won’t tell you the order in which their relationship blossomed, but if you were at the wedding you heard Alex’s brother tell everyone that story. Maybe something got a little out of order in the translation, I’m thinking (too funny).

This is probably the quickest I have ever posted a slideshow of images after a wedding, but this wedding was so much fun I couldn’t wait to get to the editing. The fact that Taryn and Alex did the “first look” also makes it so much nicer for pictures. It gives the photographer time to take the pictures without being rushed, and it gets them out of the way before the ceremony so once the ceremony is over there is just a few formal family pictures to take and then the couple is off to enjoy their party. I know a lot of people are superstitious about seeing each other before but I always encourage it so we have time to be more creative instead of hurrying and trying to just get the “safe” shots. John and I certainly had a blast with this party. It was also nice seeing two former brides at this event which always makes it nice too. The entertainment for the evening was provided by Joe Spiteri of Ultimate Events Productions and the flowers were provided by New Creations – by Kate. Once the photos are released you can view them by registering at Pictage by clicking on the shopping cart icon at the bottom of the slideshow. Enjoy the show!
