Sarah and Tom | getting to know you session

Today I met up with Sarah and Tom over at Greenfield Village to get some engagement pictures. It was really a very nice day despite the rain when we first got there. Sarah took all the blame for that one so we let her have it. Apparently every time Sarah goes to Greenfield Village it rains. But this day actually turned out very nice. We did have to dodge a few drops here and there but in the end it was a great day with nice temperatures and great light. Here are just a few of my favorites from the day. Enjoy!

Addison visits the studio

I always like it when past brides come over to have their new babies photographed, which was the case yesterday with Kristina and Brian. They were married in January of 2009 and now they are the proud new parents of little, and I do mean little, Addison. What a little peanut she is and cute as could be. Addison was in a big hurry to come into this world even though she wasn’t supposed to arrive until mid January. So Kristina and Brian got an awesome Christmas present this year when Addison arrived and she was very good for her first official photo shoot. Congratulations to the two of you. Enjoy!

4th Annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival – the slideshow

This year our church, St. John Lutheran Church, in Fraser, Michigan, performed our 4th annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. These pictures were taken by my son John and I at a dress rehearsal and then at an actual performance on Sunday, December 12, 2010.

Rooted in pagan times when the boar was the first dish served at a Roman feast, the colorful ceremony of the Boar’s Head became a part of the Christmas celebration in the great manor houses of the Middle Ages.  The Christian Church endowed the custom with symbolic meaning and elevated it to the service of God, thereby enriching the lives of all it touched.  The ceremony, sponsored by the Lord of the Manor, became a Service of Praise to Jesus Christ, Lord of the Universe and Redeemer of the World.

In 14th century England the boar was a ferocious beast and sovereign of the forest, a danger and menace to man and, therefore, the symbol of evil.  The presentation of the boar’s head at Christmas time signified the triumph of the Christ Child over sin.  No one knows who first planned the Boar’s Head Procession, but it is a matter of record that it was in use at Queen’s College, Oxford, shortly after the founding of the English University in 1340, and there it continues to this very day.

After centuries of presentation, to the ceremony of the Boar’s Head there has been added the Yule Log (symbolizing the “Light of the World”) whose embers burn all year and then light the next year’s log.  Also added over the course of many years were the Wise Men, the Shepherds, Mary and Joseph, Good King Wenceslas, and the Beefeaters (English ceremonial guards).

The Festival came to America already in colonial days where it was first observed in New England.  Through Episcopal churches and schools the ceremony was well established by the late 19th century, particularly at the Hoosac Boys School of Hoosick, New York.

From these beginnings, the Boar’s Head & Yule Log Festival has since spread to be celebrated in many Christian settings. Saint John Lutheran Church continues this ancient tradition, giving it new life through the music, drama, and gifts shared with our community by the members of this congregation.  This Festival is presented with the hope and prayer that it may be an offering of praise to the One whose birth we celebrate and that it may witness the joy we share in His Salvation.

We at Saint John are especially grateful to Concordia University, Ann Arbor and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Saginaw for their encouragement and guidance.  We also thank Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Charles, Missouri; and Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati, Ohio for the valuable assistance they have given to our preparation of the Boar’s Head & Yule Log Festival. Enjoy the show!

4th Annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival

It’s that time of year again when our church does their annual (4th) performance of the Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. This years performances are almost sold out for all three days but there are a few tickets left if you are interested then you need to act quickly and click HERE to request tickets. This is a free performance that St. John Lutheran Church does at this time each year. St. John is located in Fraser, Michigan, at 16339 Fourteen Mile Road, which is on the corner of Fourteen Mile and Utica Roads. For additional information on the history of this performance you can check out St. John’s website by clicking HERE. These pictures are just a few of the hundreds my son John and I took last night at the dress rehearsal. The first picture is of the Director of the event, Kathy Eifert who will be turning over the reigns after this years performances so this is her last year as Director. Many thanks to Kathy for her hard work for these four years. I will also be photographing the performance on Sunday so I can get some of the pictures with a full house. Enjoy!

Nathan’s First Christmas

One of the perks of using Jim Shields Photography for your wedding is I offer all of my past couples a free portrait shoot of their babies. This was the case with Hayley and Cory who brought their newest family member, Nathan, to the studio for some “Baby’s First Christmas” pictures. Nathan was so good for his first official photo shoot. I do think he is starting to do some teething as his hand was in his mouth most of the time but he is 15 weeks old and that’s how it goes. Enjoy little Nathan.
